I like to use the spray lacquer – again as with the black spray – make sure you are in a well ventilated area and use breathing protection. At The Paint Store, we provide all the necessary tools for you to protect, or renovate, your valuables and express yourself creatively in your next home improvement projects with top quality paint products and instruments. The very last step is to give them a quick spray over with a clearcoat for added protection. Now with everything dry and dust free I took a contact adhesive and glued my birds to their perches!! Once theae were dry the outer edges were lightly distressed – you can use either a sander or simple piece of sandpaper to do this. Please make sure you don’t have in a well ventilated area and where possible use a mask. The stands for my peacocks I wanted in a simple distressed black so after sanding the filler, I took Rustoleum Painters touch spray and sprayed the stands with 2 coats and waited for these to dry. The gel stain needs then to be left to dry at least overnight. Here you can see the difference between the the two! The patting technique recreates the mottled effect of aging. You then go back in over some areas with more gel stain with a patting motion. I LOVE this as it adds a great patina to the spray. On a cotton rag, dip into the gel stain and start wiping all over your piece. Once they were dry I took my favourite colour gel stain – provincial by Rustoleum. I went ahead and sprayed 2 coats on each bird The spray I used is the Rustoleum Metallic in Silver. While these were drying and the glue setting I then turned my attention to the birds □ If I were staining these I would have used wood filler. I started with the skinnier pieces and glued and nailed these together – I then went back and added slightly wider pieces to the back and bottom and filled in the nail holes with spackle. You can absolutely skip this part if you don’t have power tools – or alternatively you can ask your local big box store to cut them for you! So I measured the birds and cut 8 pieces of 3/4″ thick wood to size. The GREAT thing about this effect is that you can do it on anything – any little trinket you find can have this effect – remember though, if you are going to paint something that’s super smooth to begin with (brass / ceramic) you will need a high adhesion primer and to slightly scuff sand your piece first!Īs these peacocks are basically plastic I didn’t need to do that, I could just give them a quick clean with warm soapy water and get right into the fun stuff!įirst I knew that I wanted to add a wooden base and back – to give these guys a cute “bookend” look. They weren’t THAT bad to begin with but they weren’t the tones I wanted for my decor and I just wanted them to look a little classier – so a really easy way to do that is to add wooden stands and give them a aged silver paint effect as opposed to the bronze they currently sported! Sometimes though, I’ll come across said things, but they won’t be quite the colour or texture that I like – so when browsing through my local thrift store, I came across these super cute resin peacocks for $1 for the pair, I knew a) I’m not passing these up for a dollar and b) let’s paint all the things!!!! I like things, and by things I mean those nik naks that you display around the house that collect dust but look pretty!
